THAT PRECIOUS GIFT OF A COW / Kansas Farm Life / Carolyn’s Natural Soap

Milk again?  Brian milks the cows twice a day, morning and night.    He just came in with those heavy stainless tots filled with that precious gold, that the cow gives with out fail.

Cows who eat grass and have peaceful ,comfortable lives are the most graceful, beautiful and enjoyable thing to watch.   They dot the fields with their bright colors, and move slowly through the grass as if they were Waltzing to the sound of the wind. Often times I walk outside to join them and enjoy the warmth of the summer sun.

The sun gives the milk that much needed vitamin called Vitamin D.  We need that vitamin to remain healthy.  What a gift real milk is for the farmer and his family.

THE BROODER HOUSE / Kansas Farm Life / Carolyn’s Natural Soap

Outside in the brooder house is the first hatch of chicks.  They are getting their feathers and come to greet each child that comes to the door.  They don’t mind being held. Some of them even like to roost on a shoulder and peck at their hair. Eva tells me how they peck at the buttons on her shirt or pull on the ribbons in her hair.

DID THE CHICKEN COME FIRST? / Kansas Farm Life / Carolyn’s Natural Soap

DSC014444

Did the Chicken  come first?  Well, we all know that the hen and rooster must mate to make fertile the egg.  The eggs an the Reid ranch are just that, fertile.  Better for the table and breakfast but also for the hatch. We’re hatching our second batch of chicks today.  The children  watch and count how many are starting to open.  The first peck , the first peep, and all eyes hover over the incubators clear cover to watch each little miracle.   Eva says,” Grandma come, look it’s another black one. Hurry Grandma, It’s coming now.” Naomi, watching as she sits on the buffet next to the incubator.  Her breath making the top of the incubator wet as she waits for the next move of the little chick.  Finally It kicks the shell away and flips and flops  trying to move its legs . Naomi looks up with delight and smiles as she watches the reaction of her sisters.  It’s such fun to learn together of the miracle of life.

MORE CHICKENS ARE LOST TO THE FOX / Kansas Farm Life / Carolyn’s Natural Soap

 Mom's Farm May 07 005

We have lost more chickens.  When I’m busy in the house with soap making and all, Brian has been in the garage working on equipment and that little red fox and his brother have killed and eaten several more of our chickens right in the front yard.  Unbelievable that these foxes are so brave.  One morning, we saw both of them, one in the chicken yard and one running through the goat pens and trying to grab a hen but, the hen  managed to escape.

Again Please Pray for our Chickens…

Good news!  Akin Health Food stores have excepted Carolyn’s Natural Soaps in their chain of stores.  I’m so excited and thrilled.  Once the mid west stores of Akins have my soap for their customers I know I’ll be making more soap to keep them happy. The next big chain of health stores will be Whole Foods Market.  God is so good to this old lady.  Hang on, It’s going to be a ride to experience.  The future looks good.

HAYING SEASON IS HERE / Kansas Farm Life / Carolyn’s Natural Soap

DSC01627

Haying season is here and are farm equipment is what is taking all of Brian’s time.  It seems that every tractor needs some kind of repair.  The baler and old Side Delivery Rake  need new parts and oiled for this season. Brian finished painting the metal on the Manure Spreader farm green, and stained the new boards to keep it protected.  The manure pile is getting higher and the chicken houses need cleaned but, the brome grasses are all most ready to cut,  sooooo,  the manure removal will have to wait.
